Different by design zine

Overview
'I am, We are, different by design' is a student-led team from the University of Reading Graphic Communication department, that advocates for diversity and inclusion within the design world as part of the University's real job scheme. The aim of the zine is to showcase design work reflecting inclusion within design, celebrating both past and current students work, as well as influential designers such as Fiona Ross.
Chosen topics:
With a variety of diversity and inclusion issues across the world, it was difficult to pick a topic to write and design. I decided to take a more personal approach to this job, picking three topics that were of personal interest to me. My chosen topics were Women in Type, Emotional design and a graphic interpretation of the Russo-Ukraini war. With a close, personal connection to Ukraine, I wanted to celebrate the patriotism of Ukraine within
a graphic poster and show recognition to Ukraine and their resilience in a time of need.

What I learnt
This project enabled me to learn about and from a diverse range of perspectives in a short amount of time. By conducting my own research into my topics, I was able to learnt and resonate with others and their passions. Additionally, by taking part in this project it provided me with insight into prospective careers paths of graphic design, and the impact graphic design has. Using design for social change doesn't only advocate for representation and social justice, but also serves as a tool for visual communication.
